Heidelberg – My Favorite City in Germany

January 1, 2025

Heidelberg, my favorite city in Germany, is a charming blend of history and modernity. When I first moved to Germany, Heidelberg quickly became one of my favorite places to visit. It wasn’t just the iconic 14th-century castle that peaked my interest, but the stunning blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture that brought life into every corner of the city.

Strolling Through the Altstadt (Old Town)

Heidelberg’s Altstadt is a maze of charming cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings, cafes, and boutiques. Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest and has a wealth of historical artifacts to explore, such as the Student Jail that once held rebellious students.

The Philosopher’s Walk

The Philosopher’s Walk offers a peaceful hike with stunning views of the city and the Neckar River, a tributary of the Rhine. Named after the philosophers who once sought inspiration here, it’s a serene spot for reflection and photography.

Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss)

Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany’s most famous and picturesque castle ruins, located on a hillside overlooking the Neckar River in the city of Heidelberg. It is a stunning mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, reflecting its long and storied history.

Originally built in the early 13th century, the castle was expanded over the centuries but suffered multiple destructions, particularly during the Thirty Years’ War and the War of the Palatinate Succession. In the late 17th century, it was severely damaged by French troops and later struck by lightning in 1764, which left it in ruins. Despite its ruined state, Heidelberg Castle remains a major tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of the Old Town and the river.
