What truly defines a country?

Is it culture, history, size, sovereignty, landscape or something else entirely? For every traveler, that answer is deeply personal. Most lean on the United Nations’ list of 193 nations, all worthy stops on any journey. But for me, limiting the world to that list feels like missing out on some of the planet’s most breathtaking and unique corners.

Take Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man as an example. Each a distinct place with its own stories, landscapes, and spirit, far beyond just being part of the United Kingdom. Or Greenland, a vast territory nearly one-fifth the size of Europe, with an identity and wilderness all its own, even though it’s officially part of Denmark.

My travel list is broader because my goal isn’t just ticking boxes. It’s to experience the world’s full spectrum of wonder. And that means including extraordinary destinations like Antarctica, places that don’t always fit into traditional categories but offer unforgettable adventures and perspectives. To truly say I’ve seen the world, I need to embrace all its diverse and awe inspiring places, no matter their political status.
